We’re turning 21, yep we’ve been throwing happy people out of planes, for 21 years! Can you believe it!?
We’ve come a long way in 21 years! From a small beachside operation and a pair of optimistic young mates flying 3 tandems a load in a Cessna 206, to an international, publicly listed adventure tourism operation throwing out over 130,000 people a year! It’s safe to say we’ve grown up a bit.
Over the years we’ve changed a lot and passed some pretty significant milestones (blush). Did you know, we’ve skydived more people than the population of Macau? Or that we’ve freefalled the distance of the moon and back… TWICE! We’ve had some pretty rad times along the way too; we’d need an A380 to hold all of the awesome celebs we’ve met, from Lara Bingle, Mandy Moore and Nathan Hindmarsh, to about a dozen of those Bachelor guys and girls you see on TV, we can definitely say we’ve had some stars out our doors. We’ve had 1,000’s of successful proposals on our landing sites (100% success rate, so far!) and have even held a wedding at 15,000ft!
We’ve acquired new planes, new drop zones and lots of cheeky new staff over the years. We opened our doors using a teeny aircraft holding 2 tandem passengers and 2 instructors and today, we operate over 31 aircraft, most of them Cessna Grand Caravans, holding ten tandem passengers and ten instructors. We have grown to be the biggest tandem skydiving operation in Australia but, we haven’t lost our small town charm.
The beach-side town of Wollongong has been our home since 1998 and we are so grateful to have such an awesome place to hang our hats (and our rigs!). Our company Founder and Non-Executive director Anthony “Bowie” Boucaut had a dream, to give everyone the chance to experience skydiving and the opportunity to do it in an incredible location, on the beach! Over the past 21 years, that dream has been fulfilled hundreds of thousands of times at over 15 incredible locations in Australia and even three in New Zealand, that’s no mean feat, and it all started, right here in The 'Gong.
Check out some of the neat things we’ve done over the past 21 years. Yeah, we’re pretty proud!
1998: First operations commenced in Stuart Park, Wollongong
2010: Mandy Moore graced our plane, and we threw her out!
2011: We headed south of the border and opened a drop zone in St Kilda, the closest drop zone to a CBD in Australia
2011: We started throwing people out of planes, AT NIGHT TIME!
2012-2014: We opened A HEAP more drop zones locations along the east coast of Australia.
2012: We threw Lara Bingle out of a plane (yes, we gave her a parachute)
2015: Publicly listed on the Australian Stock Exchange! Ate strawberries and drank champagne.
2015: We flew across the ditch and started operations in New Zealand, bro.
2016: Things got pretty wild in 2016. We successfully raised enough capital to start operations outside of tandem skydiving and acquired Raging Thunder Adventures in Far North QLD.
2017: We dipped our toe in the waters of FNQ and we LIKED IT! In 2017, we acquired Reef Magic Cruises and Calypso Cruises.
2017: We turned our eyes back to the skies and acquired Byron Bay and Hunter Valley Hot air ballooning operations.
2017: Oh we also did another huge thing in 2017 and changed our listed name to Experience Co. which brought all of our incredible experiences under one umbrella brand (still all managed from Wollongong might we add!).
2018: We’d like to say we relaxed in 2018 and finally put our feet up but alas, we actually broke our own record for the most tandem skydives done in one day - 328! And yep, we did that in The Gong, too.
2018: We jumped out of a plane with the Queen’s baton on its journey to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games.
2019: So, we turned 21. That means we had to really grow up (kinda...) so we appointed some pretty fancy people at the top of our ranks to help us continue on our wild ride. You can find out more about our board and management team here. It’s worth a look, they’re pretty cool.
2020: We throw MORE of your out of planes and continue our adventure with you guys, the people who make it all worthwhile.
